PHIL390 Topics in Philosophy (Adam Smith) — Winter 2027
This course introduces the life and selected works of the so-called ‘Father of Capitalism,’ the Scottish philosopher
and economist Adam Smith (1723-1790). Excerpts from Smith’s most famous work, The Wealth of Nations (1776) will be read alongside excerpts from his book of moral philosophy, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), along with related texts. This course challenges students to understand the key components of Smith’s philosophy, while also providing insight into Early Modern Scottish history and 18th century Scottish philosophy.
